Citydesigner was appointed by Multiplex Ltd in 2005 to carry out a townscape and visual study for the Castle House scheme. The consultancy worked closely with the architects in the design development of the scheme. Following continual assessments, as the design developed, it produced the Townscape, Conservation and Visual Assessment report, which formed part of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The proposals included the demolition of the unlisted buildings on site and the development of two new buildings, a 5 storey pavilion building and a 43 storey residential building. It was the first tall building to be approved in the Elephant and Castle regeneration area. The design evolution included an authentic image for the top of the building which was combined with the search for renewable energy sources. This led to the idea of turbines on the chamfered top, thereby giving the building its unique image and sophisticated form. The project was approved and its construction is fully underway.
