MAJOR SCHEMES & TALL BUILDINGS
Richard Coleman Citydesigner was appointed by British Land in 2003 to carry out a heritage, townscape and visual impact assessment for their 2 mixed-use redevelopment schemes for several buildings along Osnaburgh Street, and 1960s offices blocks on Euston Road.
The consultancy worked closely with the three project architects Terry Farrell and Partners, Wilkinson Eyre Architects and Munkenbeck and Marshall. The consultancy conducted extensive research on the existing buildings, particularly the 19th century buildings along Osnaburgh Street to gain a thorough understanding of their heritage and architectural value and contribution to the local townscape. The consultancy’s principal role, thereafter, was to continually assess on the architects’ designs and the visual impact of the proposals within their townscape context. The task was to guide the design team towards a solution that was both sensitive to the surrounding townscape and of high enough architectural quality to justify the level of demolition. The consultancy also produced Townscape, Conservation and Visual Assessment reports for the 2 applications, incorporating a number of AVRs to demonstrate the visual impact of the proposals, particularly in views from Regents Park. These reports formed part of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in support of the planning applications submitted for the schemes. The projects were approved and are now under construction.
